CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS:

BEATRICE: Strong and independent, quick witted and can be sharp tongued, has a history with Benedict.  Generous and kind hearted but guarded. Can be played by an older actress.

BENEDICT: World  weary soldier, loyal to his friends, loudly proclaims his intention to remain a bachelor.  Engages in witty banter with BEATRICE whom he really loves but has disappointed in the past. May be played by an older actor.

HERO: Stereotypical virginal heroine, romantic, naive and trusting.  Falls in love at first sight with Claudio.  Relies on her cousin Beatrice for advice and companionship.

CLAUDIO: Young and callow heroic stereotypical leading man. Proclaims love for Hero but believes the worst of her..   Gullible, intolerant and even violent…..otherwise a great guy.

DON PEDRO: A nobleman, the commander of Benedict and Beatrice. An old friend to Leonato.  Has no female counterpart but enjoys romantic intrigue. His fault is his suspicious nature and rush to judgement.  Should be older than CLAUDIO.

LEONATO: Hero’s father and uncle to BEATRICE. He is Governor of Messina. Should be played by an older actor.

DON JOHN: Don Pedro’s dastardly bastard brother. Stereotypical, cowardly, conniving, mustache twirling villain.   Can be played by an actor between age 20 to 60.

MARGARET: Amiable but bawdy waiting woman. She is unwittingly a pawn in DON JOHN’s worst scheme.  Sometime romantic partner to  the thuggish BORACHIO.

CONRAD and BORACHIO: Thuggish companions and co-conspirators with Don John.

DOGBERRY AND VERGES : Constable of Messina and his loyal deputy. Overly enthusiastic and eager to please, bumbling and buffoonish but honest.

ANTONIO:  Loving father to Beatrice.
